Whilst Halifax retains many aspects of its traditional engineering and textiles heritage, the "heavy" end of the business has been largely replaced by more sophisticated computer based technologies that are more reliant on developing and maintaining intellectual property. Dean Clough Mills once the epicentre of the world's carpet manufacturing industry characterises the spirit of the town, and now houses a thriving business community of several thousand people. Halifax is extraordinarily fortunate in that it lays pretty much at the geographic centre of the UK being midway between York & Leeds in the East, Manchester & Liverpool in the West and London and Edinburgh South and North all linked by the motorway network. The Piece Hall is in stark contrast to its more recent neighbour Eureka! Eureka! was Britain's first hands-on museum designed especially for children up to the age of 12, it is still probably the finest interactive children's museums in the country.
