Halifax Commerce
Of course, everyone knows Halifax as the birthplace of the famous Halifax Building Society in The Old Cock Inn, Southgate where you can still pop in for a drink and a bite to eat. Now renamed the Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) the business is at the hub of a strong and vibrant financial community within the town.
Whilst Halifax retains many aspects of its traditional engineering and textiles heritage, the "heavy" end of the business has been largely replaced by more sophisticated computer based technologies that are more reliant on developing and maintaining intellectual property. Dean Clough Mills once the epicentre of the world's carpet manufacturing industry characterises the spirit of the town, and now houses a thriving business community of several thousand people. Alongside this business community Dean Clough is home to an inspirational array Artists & Art Galleries, a Theatre and a couple of restaurants - a veritable cornucopia of creativity - take the Virtual Tour of Dean Clough.
Within the town itself, Halifax Piece Hall is a hugely impressive monumental building dating back to 1779. Take the Virtual Tour of Halifax Piece Hall. Built to sell the pieces of woollen and worsted cloths woven by craftsmen in their own homes high on the hills and moors of the area in the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Piece Hall stands resplendent today as a home to a hundred or so artisans working in for example glass.
